Opus Aircraft

edit

From the Wikipedia page: "Opus Aircraft of North Carolina, United States acquired manufacturing rights plus a selection of aircraft parts. They have produced an "Opus Super 2" prototype, but their proposed resumption of production has yet to begin. Little news has emerged from the North Carolina operation for some time, and, perhaps ominously, the Opus AIrcraft website has gone off-line."

One hopes that all is well in North Carolina, but the signs are not good. As the Opus website has gone down, I suggest it would be a good thing to revive the link to the owners website, http://sites.google.com/site/flyarv/Home as the only comprehensive on-line ARV resource. They are probably out of business. I sent an e-mail to the last known address to inquire if the company is still in business. I'll post here if I hear back from them. I have added an external link to the Archive.org listings for the Opus Aircraft website, so previous versions of it can be easily found. The owners' website is not an acceptable external link under both WP:EL and more specifically WP:TYPECLUB. - Ahunt (talk) 20:11, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well it has been six days since I wrote to them. The e-mail didn't bounce back, but I had no reply, so I have to assume that they are out of business. - Ahunt (talk) 11:53, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Jabiru 2200 engine

edit

The Jabiru 2200 reference has been deleted. The reality is that G-DEXP was re-engined with this Australian engine some time ago (as the photo shows). When the CAA's G-INFO website is updated, this information will become official, and the Jabiru data can be restored. Arrivisto (talk) 21:46, 25 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sure that is fine - it just needs to cite a ref. - Ahunt (talk) 23:19, 25 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have asked the new owner of G-DEXP to investigate why G-INFO still thinks that the aircraft still has a Hewland engine, when the change to a Jabiru was fully approved by the LAA, and the aircraft has been flying happily with its new engine for some time. Arrivisto (talk) 15:02, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
G-INFO has been updated to confirm the Jabiru 2200 installation. Arrivisto (talk) 10:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Good find! - Ahunt (talk) 19:52, 15 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Operational history

edit

I am considering extending the paragraph "Operational history" to "Operational history & safety record". I've noted the comments "Please don't include accidents here unless they make the standard explained at WP:AIRCRASH"; but it should be possible to state that the ARV's safety record has been good. To the best of my knowledge, there have been only two serious accidents; one (non-fatal) when a Hewland engine overheated and seized when the belt-drive to the water-pump failed; and a fatal accident when a Super2 stalled after take-off, an accident which the AAIB declared to be pilot error. Any views?

That would be under "Accidents and incidents" as per Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft/page content. You can indicate that there have only been two accidents, with refs, but to make a statement that "the safety record is good" would be WP:OR as it requires analysis of rates and hours flown, so that requires refs that indicate that the safety record is good in comparison to other aircraft. It could be that the small fleet is not being flown much and that explains the low number of accidents, which is why it hangs on WP:V. - Ahunt (talk) 16:05, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
I would welcome something on its safety record. Incidentally, I acquired the engine from the ARV that suffered seizure, and I was deeply impressed by the Hewland engine's build quality. The current owner of the Hewland rights, an engineer in Manchester, has redesigned the water pump arrangement to avoid any repeat of the incident. Arrivisto (talk) 14:47, 21 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Vortex gennies

edit

I have removed the following as I could find no reference for it even on the Aircraft website. If any body can give a reference then please do so and re-inststate the sentence.

"The Light Aircraft Association has approved a trial of vortex generators so as to improve elevator effectiveness and lower the stall speed.[citation needed]"

I have an official letter, addressed to me from Francis Donaldson of the LAA, that permits these tests. I don't quite know how to turn this LAA letter into a ref. The tests will be carried out in due course. Arrivisto (talk) 22:11, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
If it is a paper letter, I don't suppose you could scan it and post it on a website somewhere? - Ahunt (talk) 22:48, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Substantial reformatting. See talk page.

edit

I have made a number of formatting changes as follows: The introduction is shorter, and there is a new paragraph on the ARV's rather sad production history. I thought it useful to separate the description of the aircraft from the production issues. Arrivisto (talk) 14:47, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I just went over your changes and, other than one heading level adjustment to fit into Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft/page content, it looks good! - Ahunt (talk) 14:51, 19 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

ARV Super2 Owners Club

edit

In August 2011, a reference to the ARV Owners' Club was deleted under WP:TYPECLUB, which refers the reader to Aircraft type club. The latter page seems less than useful, with just one reference (repeated five times!), and with only two "notable aircraft type clubs" listed. Since new material on the ARV seems hard to come by, it seems a shame to deny readers access to this useful source of information. So, even if it doesn't make it back to the main page, here it is again:

WP:TYPECLUB came about because we had way too much spamming of aircraft types clubs all over the aircraft articles here on Wikipedia. It isn't Wikipedia's role to provide links to everything related to a subject and so we developed a consensus to omit gratuitous links to type clubs. People can find these on their own using a search engine. - Ahunt (talk) 14:43, 20 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's true the ARV Owners Club is fairly easy to find on Google, but perhaps it might usefully be listed on the Aircraft type club page. Arrivisto (talk) 15:24, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that the organization is just not notable in that it doesn't meet WP:ORG. - Ahunt (talk) 23:26, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

New ARV Super2 book

edit

I've just added a new book to the bibliography. (Frederic P. Miller, Agnes F. Vandome, John McBrewster,ed. "ARV Super2". Alphascript Publishing 2014. ISBN 978-613-6-75668-4). I haven't seen it yet, but it's on order. The publisher's blurb says:

"Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The ARV Super2 is a British light aircraft. Intended to be an affordable two-seat light trainer, it is a single-engined shoulder-wing monoplane. Around 35 aircraft were produced in the 1980s before the manufacturing companies became bankrupt. There are proposals to resume production, but no schedule yet. After breaking the world land speed record in 1983, the UK entrepreneur Richard Noble, spotted a gap in the market for a low-cost light two-seat trainer, since expensive product-liability lawsuits in the United States had temporarily driven the major American [GA] manufacturers to abandon production of such aircraft."

This looks pretty much the same as the text we've written, but at least they're honest enough to have named Wikipedia as the source! Arrivisto (talk) 15:25, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

If it is just a reprint of this one article it would be a slim book! Let us know when you get it! - Ahunt (talk) 20:29, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I got one of these, out of interest. It is ridiculously overpriced, and contains nothing more than an oddball selection of out-of-date Wikipedia pages. An absurd book, which I have deleted from the list of references. Arrivisto (talk) 11:38, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oh, that is too bad. I guess that is cheap and quick to put those out, but it doesn't say much about the fine state of publishing these days! - Ahunt (talk) 12:46, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Mod 10360

edit

"Thanks for adding this, but where is the ref? " I've just had this email from the LAA: "Hi Txxxxx, Just to let you know that mod 10360 is now formally approved. Regards, Jxx" Better late than never! So the modification is now on the LAA's list of approved mods. However, I can't yet think of a citation for the lack of carb-heat except to say that any fuel injection system inherently obviates the need for carb heat, as there is no carb and therefore no carb icing. Arrivisto (talk)

Not making our job easy, are they? I am guessing that LAA will publish something on this in the near future. Do they have the list of approved mods somewhere? - Ahunt (talk) 17:48, 26 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
