Talk:1970 South African Grand Prix

Latest comment: 1 year ago by Allenbrown in topic Fastest lap

Note: Reliable sources sometimes disagree about race results. In this case there is disagreement over who set the fastest lap of the race (i.e. either Jack Brabham alone, or both Jack Brabham and John Surtees). Current English Wikipedia consensus is that the fastest lap was set by Jack Brabham alone. Before changing this, please see the 70 RSA entry on the disputed results page, then start a discussion either on this page or on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Formula One. The consensus regarding other disputed results are listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Formula One/Disputed results.

Fastest lap

edit

Surtees' lap time of 1m 20.8s is a mistake. His time on lap 6 was actually 1m 22.8s. Autocourse gave times for each lap and show his time was 1m 22.8s, and comparison with the cars around him shows this must be right. Video evidence also shows him running in a pack of cars, and the others around him were doing times in the same 1m 22/1m 23 region.

Much discussion of this here: https://forums.autosport.com/topic/223290-fastest-lap-at-the-1970-south-african-gp/

Fastest lap should be awarded solely to Jack Brabham.

Where else on Wikipedia might this need to be changed? Allen Brown (talk) 14:51, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Allenbrown: Thank you for the information. As you might imagine, the current content of the article is based on the various sources which credit fastest lap to both drivers. But in light of this new information (and the fact that FORIX, which I consider to be one of the most reliable sources, credits the fastest lap only to Brabham), I think there is justification to change it. I'll advertise this discussion at the Formula One WikiProject, and if there are no objections within a few days, I'll update all the relevant articles.
