Proper nomenclature for cycloadditions edit
Square brackets are used to indicate the number of electrons in each component taking part in a cycloadditions. In this case, the allyl cation component has two pi electrons and the diene has four, hence this should be a [4+2] cycloaddition.
To show the number of atoms in each component, parentheses should be used. Therefore it is also a (4+3) cycloaddition. I'm afraid that as far as I'm aware, the entire article has gotten it the wrong way round.
