The Sherman Industrial Institute was organized in 1891, as North Huntsville School.[4] The name was changed in 1804, and was named in honor of Union Army general William Tecumseh Sherman.[4] One of the school's sites was previously owned by the Freedman's Aid Society and had been home to Central Alabama Academy.[3]

F. R. Davis served as principal of Sherman Industrial Institute.[4][5] Teachers at the school were African American.[4] In 1922, Sherman Industrial Institute was reported to have 5 teachers for its 180 students.[6]
