The BBC banned the song because of its content - credit card dirty phone calls.[3]

The lyrics deal with phone sex, and the video for the song has become an internet phenomenon. The song reflects the overall theme of the Village People album Sex Over the Phone, which are "safer sex" practices. There are two versions of this song: the original (4:22) version has a mid-tempo beat, and the Club versions (6:26 and 4:15) have a faster beat.

Village People were planning on doing an updated version of Sex Over The Phone for their comeback album with “Hot Cop” Victor Willis after his 28 year absence. The premise of the video would include Victor Willis in a Minions theme thong. The new members of Village People who are a bunch of new non musical types would recreate the original 1985 video using modern phones with Willis’ life partner Kevin as the role of the female lead in the video. Plans were scrapped in favor of an ill attempted Christmas EP which received mostly negative reviews.
