The National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SERNANP) is a specialized technical public agency of the Peruvian State, under the Ministry of the Environment of Peru,[1] responsible for directing and establishing the technical and administrative criteria for the conservation of Peru's Natural Protected Areas. SERNANP was created on 13 May 2008, replacing the former National Institute of Natural Resources - INRENA, founded on 27 November 1992 as an agency under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation.[2] Additionally, it ensures the conservation of Protected Natural Areas, their biological diversity, and the maintenance of their ecosystem services, within the framework of its participatory management and in line with a comprehensive policy of sustainable development for the country.
