April 1

  • 1982 - Cyclone Bernie caused damaging floods while moving through the Solomon Islands.
  • 2000 - Cyclone Hudah (pictured) reached peak strength with 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) just before striking Madagascar. Hudah killed 114 people across southeastern Africa.

  • 1995 - Cyclone Marlene reached peak intensity with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and a barometric pressure of 920 hPa.
  • 2007 - Cyclone Jaya (pictured) made landfall over in Sambava, Madagascar, causing one death.

  • 1978 - Cyclone Alby passed close to the southwestern coast of Western Australia, killing 5 people and causing $39 million worth of damage along the coastline.
  • 1994 - Severe Tropical Storm Owen moved across the central Philippines, killing 10 people.
  • 2003 - Cyclone Inigo (pictured) became one of the most intense tropical cyclone in the Australian region when it reached Category 5 cyclone intensity, with 10 minute sustained winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) and a pressure of 900 mbar. Inigo earlier caused floods in Indonesia that killed 58 people.

  • 2006 - Cyclone Hubert reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 970 hPa (mbar), near the Western Australia coastline.
  • 2020 - Cyclone Harold (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone while passing Vanuatu. Harold caused 30 deaths along with estimated damages of US$123.5 million.

  • 1979 - Cyclone Idylle remains active in the eastern side of the South-West Indian Ocean basin, just before reaching peak strength and entering the Australian region basin.
  • 1984 - Cyclone Kamisy (pictured) reaches peak intensity as an Intense tropical cyclone, just before brushing the northern part of Madagascar and was dubbed as the worst storm to hit the country since 1911. Kamisy killed 69 people and caused 810 billion Ariary in damages (about US$250 million).

April 9,

  • 1998 - Tropical Storm Gemma attains peak strength over the South-West Indian Ocean, with winds of 85 km/h (50 mph), according to the MFR. The JTWC, however, classified Gemma's peak as a Category 1 tropical cyclone two days later.
  • 2005 - Cyclone Juliet (pictured) reaches peak strength, with 10-minute sustained winds of 205 km/h (125 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 905 hPa (mbar).

  • 2003 - Subtropical Storm Luma reaches peak strength as a subtropical storm with winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) in the extremely southern portion of the Indian Ocean basin.
  • 2004 - Typhoon Sudal (pictured) reaches peak strength as a Category 4 super typhoon as it destroyed 90% of crops in Micronesia.
  • 2014 - Cyclone Ita reaches peak strength of 10-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), killing a total of 40 people and damages up to US$1.15 billion.

April 12,

  • 1983 - Cyclone Veena (pictured) reaches peak strength as a Category 3 cyclone over in the extreme Southeastern Pacific of the basin with a minimum pressure of 925 hPa.
  • 2002 - Cyclone Bonnie reached its peak intensity with 85 km/h (50 mph) winds after passing over Timor island.

  • 1985 - Cyclone Gretel passed directly over Darwin causing extensive damage but no fatalities. Gretel inflicted a total of $3.5 million worth of damage.
  • 1986 - Cyclone Martin (pictured) slowly weakens from a severe tropical cyclone after affecting Fiji.

  • 1952 - A cyclone in Tanzania became the strongest ever landfall in the country, causing 34 fatalities.
  • 2000 - Cyclone Neil (pictured) reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 992 hPa (mbar). Neil brought heavy rains to Fiji.
  • 2009 - Cyclone Bijli becomes a named storm over in the Bay of Bengal. Bijli later killed a total of 7 people.

  • 2008 - Typhoon Neoguri reaches peak intensity with 1-minute winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) over in the South China Sea.
  • 2016 - While moving through the Seychelles, Cyclone Fantala became the strongest recorded tropical cyclone in the south-west Indian Ocean, with 10-minute winds of 255 km/h (155 mph).
  • 2021 - Typhoon Surigae (pictured) reaches peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 895 hPa, making it the strongest Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone to form before the month of May.

  • 2000 - Tropical Storm Innocente (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) in the central Indian Ocean. Innocente did not affect any land.
  • 2000 - Cyclone Paul begins weakening after it attained peak strength as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone by BoM.

  • 1997 - Typhoon Isa (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 270 km/h (165 mph) to the west of the Mariana Islands. Isa passed south of Guam, where it caused beneficial rainfall.
  • 2017 - Tropical Storm Arlene intensifies from a subtropical depression, making it one of only two systems in the Atlantic to form in the month of April.

  • 1998 - Cyclone Alan moved through French Polynesia, causing ten deaths, mostly related to landslides from its heavy rainfall.
  • 2019 - Cyclone Kenneth (pictured) became the strongest recorded tropical cyclone to strike Mozambique, hitting the northeastern portion of the country with 1 minute winds of 220 km/h (140 mph). Kenneth killed 52 people along its path through the Comoros and southeast Africa.

  • 1892 - A cyclone struck Mauritius with gusts to 216 km/h (134 mph); much of the island was destroyed, with 1,200 fatalities and 50,000 people left homeless.
  • 1991 - A powerful cyclone (pictured) made landfall near Chittagong, Bangladesh killing 138,866 people and causing $1.5 billion worth of damage.
  • 2014 - Typhoon Tapah reached peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) while affecting the Mariana Islands.
