April 1

1982 - Cyclone Bernie caused damaging floods while moving through the Solomon Islands.
2000 - Cyclone Hudah (pictured) reached peak strength with 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) just before striking Madagascar. Hudah killed 114 people across southeastern Africa.

April 2

2000 - Cyclone Tessi (pictured) hit the Queensland coast to the north of Townsville, causing torrential rainfall, floods, and landsildes.

April 3

1995 - Cyclone Marlene reached peak intensity with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) and a barometric pressure of 920 hPa.
2007 - Cyclone Jaya (pictured) made landfall over in Sambava, Madagascar, causing one death.

April 4

1978 - Cyclone Alby passed close to the southwestern coast of Western Australia, killing 5 people and causing $39 million worth of damage along the coastline.
1994 - Severe Tropical Storm Owen moved across the central Philippines, killing 10 people.
2003 - Cyclone Inigo (pictured) became one of the most intense tropical cyclone in the Australian region when it reached Category 5 cyclone intensity, with 10 minute sustained winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) and a pressure of 900 mbar. Inigo earlier caused floods in Indonesia that killed 58 people.

April 5

1967 - Typhoon Violet reached its peak intensity with 220 km/h (140 mph) winds in the Philippine Sea. Violet hit northern Luzon a few days later, causing minimal damage.
2009 - Cyclone Jade (pictured) intensifies into a tropical storm just few hours before making landfall in Madagascar.

April 6

2006 - Cyclone Hubert reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 970 hPa (mbar), near the Western Australia coastline.
2020 - Cyclone Harold (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone while passing Vanuatu. Harold caused 30 deaths along with estimated damages of US$123.5 million.

April 7

1982 - Cyclone Dominic made landfall on the northwestern coast of Queensland, Australia. Dominic caused at least $3.6 million of damage, mostly in the Darwin area.
1999 - Cyclone Gwenda (pictured), as a Category 2 cyclone, makes landfall over Port Hedland, Western Australia after it reached peak of 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph).

April 8

1979 - Cyclone Idylle remains active in the eastern side of the South-West Indian Ocean basin, just before reaching peak strength and entering the Australian region basin.
1984 - Cyclone Kamisy (pictured) reaches peak intensity as an Intense tropical cyclone, just before brushing the northern part of Madagascar and was dubbed as the worst storm to hit the country since 1911. Kamisy killed 69 people and caused 810 billion Ariary in damages (about US$250 million).

April 9,

1998 - Tropical Storm Gemma attains peak strength over the South-West Indian Ocean, with winds of 85 km/h (50 mph), according to the MFR. The JTWC, however, classified Gemma's peak as a Category 1 tropical cyclone two days later.
2005 - Cyclone Juliet (pictured) reaches peak strength, with 10-minute sustained winds of 205 km/h (125 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 905 hPa (mbar).

April 10,

1968 - During the passage of former Cyclone Giselle, the ferry TEV Wahine hit the Barrett Reef near Wellington, New Zealand, killing 53 of the people aboard.
1996 - Cyclone Olivia (pictured) produced the highest wind gust on Earth, when an anemometer on Barrow Island recorded a 3-second wind gust of 408 km/h (253 mph).

April 11,

2003 - Subtropical Storm Luma reaches peak strength as a subtropical storm with winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) in the extremely southern portion of the Indian Ocean basin.
2004 - Typhoon Sudal (pictured) reaches peak strength as a Category 4 super typhoon as it destroyed 90% of crops in Micronesia.
2014 - Cyclone Ita reaches peak strength of 10-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), killing a total of 40 people and damages up to US$1.15 billion.

April 12,

1983 - Cyclone Veena (pictured) reaches peak strength as a Category 3 cyclone over in the extreme Southeastern Pacific of the basin with a minimum pressure of 925 hPa.
2002 - Cyclone Bonnie reached its peak intensity with 85 km/h (50 mph) winds after passing over Timor island.

April 13

1991 - The Angola Tropical Storm of 1991 (pictured) reached its peak intensity off the Angolan coast, becoming the first tropical cyclone ever recorded in the South Atlantic basin.

April 14,

1985 - Cyclone Gretel passed directly over Darwin causing extensive damage but no fatalities. Gretel inflicted a total of $3.5 million worth of damage.
1986 - Cyclone Martin (pictured) slowly weakens from a severe tropical cyclone after affecting Fiji.

April 15

1952 - A cyclone in Tanzania became the strongest ever landfall in the country, causing 34 fatalities.
2000 - Cyclone Neil (pictured) reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 992 hPa (mbar). Neil brought heavy rains to Fiji.
2009 - Cyclone Bijli becomes a named storm over in the Bay of Bengal. Bijli later killed a total of 7 people.

April 16

1978 - Cyclone Hal starts becoming extratropical while it affects New Zealand from a severe tropical cyclone.
2003 - Typhoon Kujira (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 250 km/h (155 mph) in the Philippine Sea. Kujira killed 2 people on Pohnpei in Micronesia.

April 17

2008 - Typhoon Neoguri reaches peak intensity with 1-minute winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) over in the South China Sea.
2016 - While moving through the Seychelles, Cyclone Fantala became the strongest recorded tropical cyclone in the south-west Indian Ocean, with 10-minute winds of 255 km/h (155 mph).
2021 - Typhoon Surigae (pictured) reaches peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 895 hPa, making it the strongest Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone to form before the month of May.

April 18

2000 - Tropical Storm Innocente (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) in the central Indian Ocean. Innocente did not affect any land.
2000 - Cyclone Paul begins weakening after it attained peak strength as a Category 5 severe tropical cyclone by BoM.

April 19

1945 - Tropical Storm Ann, the first named tropical system in the Northwest Pacific, develops over in Micronesia.
1959 - Typhoon Tilda attains peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) as it was west of Guam.
2000 - Cyclone Rosita (pictured) reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 930 hPa (mbar) to the north of Broome, Western Australia.

April 20

1997 - Typhoon Isa (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 270 km/h (165 mph) to the west of the Mariana Islands. Isa passed south of Guam, where it caused beneficial rainfall.
2017 - Tropical Storm Arlene intensifies from a subtropical depression, making it one of only two systems in the Atlantic to form in the month of April.

April 21

1992 - A subtropical storm developed to the southeast of Bermuda. This system was never classified as a tropical system.
2003 - Tropical Storm Ana (pictured) became a full-fledged tropical cyclone, the first ever recorded in the North Atlantic Ocean during the month of April.

April 22

1989 - Cyclone Orson (pictured) struck the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The storm sank several boats near the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, killing 4 people and causing over $20 million of damage.
2005 - Tropical Cyclone Sheila, only recognized by the FMS, reaches peak intensity before rapidly dissipating the next day, ending the season.

April 23

2006 - Cyclone Monica (pictured) reached its peak intensity just off the Northern Australian coast with a central pressure of 916 hPa (mbar).
2010 - Over in the Western Region of Australian, Cyclone Sean attains peak intensity as a Category 2 tropical cyclone, without affecting land.

April 24

1987 - Cyclone Elizabeta reached peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 140 km/h (90 mph), while it was south of Madagascar.
2001 - Cyclone Alistair (pictured) made landfall near Carnarvon, Western Australia. The highest reported wind gust was 90 km/h (55 mph).

April 25

1998 - Cyclone Alan moved through French Polynesia, causing ten deaths, mostly related to landslides from its heavy rainfall.
2019 - Cyclone Kenneth (pictured) became the strongest recorded tropical cyclone to strike Mozambique, hitting the northeastern portion of the country with 1 minute winds of 220 km/h (140 mph). Kenneth killed 52 people along its path through the Comoros and southeast Africa.

April 26

1976 - Cyclone Watorea (pictured) reached peak intensity while nearing Queensland, before rapidly moving to the southeast, as it exited the basin and affected New Zealand.
1999 - Tropical Storm Kate reached its peak intensity with winds of 140 km/h (85 mph) in the Philippine Sea. Kate had only minimal effects on land in the Philippines and Iwo Jima.

April 27

1974 - Tropical Storm Babe passed just to the east of Guam before hitting Saipan as a developing system.
1995 - As a tropical depression, Tropical Storm Chuck (pictured) develops out over in the Marshall Islands causing only minor damage.

April 28

1973 - An unnamed cyclone, sometimes called Cyclone Flores, rapidly strengthened into a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone in the Banda Sea of Indonesia. The storm killed 1,653 people, becoming the deadliest tropical cyclone recorded in the Southern Hemisphere.
2006 - Cyclone Mala (pictured) reached its peak intensity, with a minimum central pressure of 954 hPa (mbar) in the Bay of Bengal. Mala struck Burma soon after, killing 22 people.

April 29

1892 - A cyclone struck Mauritius with gusts to 216 km/h (134 mph); much of the island was destroyed, with 1,200 fatalities and 50,000 people left homeless.
1991 - A powerful cyclone (pictured) made landfall near Chittagong, Bangladesh killing 138,866 people and causing $1.5 billion worth of damage.
2014 - Typhoon Tapah reached peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) while affecting the Mariana Islands.

April 30

1982 - Cyclone Karla (pictured) reaches peak strength as a Category 3 Intense tropical cyclone with a barometric pressure of 927 mbar over in the Indian Ocean.
2024 - The 2023–24 Australian region and South Pacific cyclone seasons officially end.
