History edit

The Oak Grove area was first settled in the 1850s and may have been served by a local Ebenezer Baptist Church as early as the next decade. It had 65 members in 1872. Fifteen people lived in the community in the 1930s and had several scattered houses, a church, and three businesses, one of which was a factory. It grew to 50 from the early 1940s to the late 1960s. Only a few scattered houses and a church remained in 1960. The population was reported as 74 from 1968 through 2000.[2]

Geography edit

Oak Grove is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 14 and 2088, 7 mi (11 km) east of Quitman in north-central Wood County.[2]

Education edit

The first Sunday school was held at the local church in 1872. An official school was built that year with desks and glass windows and became one of the first schools to be built in the county. It was funded by private subscriptions. Another school was built in 1896, and both schools hosted 122 students and three teachers. It continued to have a school in the 1930s.[2] Today, the community is served by the Quitman Independent School District.
