Mailo (also known as Net-C, or NetCourrier) is a French webmail service created and run by Mail Object, a company based in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in Val-de-Marne.[1]

Services and Systems edit

Mailo offers webmail, synchronisation with various protocols (POP, IMAP, Exchange ActiveSync, etc.), a calendar offering, and file storage. Mobile apps are also available (iOS, Android and Windows Phone).

Protection against malware, spam and phishing attempts is offered through a partnership with specialist company Vade Secure.[2] The webmail also provides an auto-unsubscribe button for newsletters.

Offer and economic model edit

Mailo works as freemium software. The free tier provides users with free email addresses, 5 aliases, and 500 MB of cloud storage while displaying ads in the webmail interface. The paid tier costs €1 per month and provides 100 aliases, 10 GB cloud storage and no ads on the webmail service.[3][4] It also offers an additional plan aimed toward families, associations, and public bodies.[5]

Apart from its webmail service, Mailo offers domain names and website hosting.

Positioning edit

Mailo advertises itself as the protector of the personal data of its users.[6] All data is hosted on servers located in France by Écritel.[7]

History edit

In 1998, Pascal Voyat and Philippe Lenoir created Francemail, a French-language e-mail service accessible via the Internet, Minitel and telephone, which was renamed to FranceMel the following year. In 1999, the service was acquired by the Lagardère Group, who renamed it again to NetCourrier. In 2007, the two founders aforementioned bought the NetCourrier service through Mail Object from the Lagardère Group.

In 2008, NetCourrier launched a Web 2.0 messaging service based on Mail Object technology. In 2010, it launched services tailored to children and families: NetCourrier Kids and NetCourrier Family, since renamed Mailo Junior and Mailo Family.

In 2012, NetCourrier was renamed as Net-C. Net-C consolidates net-c.com, netcourrier.com, netcmail.com, netc.eu, netc.fr, francemel.fr and other domain names. In 2015, Net-C also consolidated Alinto's consumer messaging services: lavache.com, emailasso.net, inmano.com, brusseler.com.

In 2019, Net-C acquired the free, open-source messaging service Mailoo.org.

Also in 2019, Net-C was renamed to its current name, Mailo. The service remained the same, but a new, more modern interface with an application launcher was launched. The choice of domain name, interface (modern or retro), children's, family, company or association mailboxes remains available, as does the premium package offering additional options for €1/month.
