History

edit

The Mullins community formed the Bethany Baptist Church in 1907. Five miles to the west, in the Mount Olive region, locals joined that church in 1912. In the end, they regrouped as the Midway Baptist Church, and in 1923, they erected a church in the location of the Midway community. A general store was established there in 1924 after a gin was constructed there shortly after. Midway had a washateria, a cafe, a blacksmith shop, a barbershop, and a gas station at various points in time. The village had three businesses, ten residents, and a church by 1933. By 1940, there were three shops, a cemetery, and a few dispersed homes. In the 1940s and 1950s, 40 was the stated population. The church started construction on a parsonage in 1939, and a new brick church was erected in 1949. Perhaps as a result of widespread oil drilling in the region, Midway saw a boom in the early 1960s, with a peak population of 350 in 1961. By 1968, it had dropped to 30, and from 1974 to 2000, it was believed to be 20.[2]
