Prior to joining ESPN on a full-time basis, Smith covered the New England Patriots and the NFL from 2001 to 2004 as a reporter for the Boston Globe. He then joined ESPN in September 2004 as a senior writer for ESPN.com and an NFL Insider for SportsCenter and NFL Live. From February 2017 to March 2018, Smith was a lead anchor on ESPN's SC6, also known as The Six or SportsCenter 6, which aired weekdays at 6:00pm. On March 8, 2018, Smith announced he would be leaving the show immediately. This announcement did not come as a surprise as his co-anchor departed from the show in January 2018.
