Elections to Liverpool City Council were held on 10 May 1973.

99 of 99 seats
to Liverpool City Council following the reduction in the number of Councillors from 120 to 99 and the abolition of Aldermen. The Local Government Act 1972 changed the election timetable from election by thirds every three years to election by thirds every four years with the fallow year having elections to Merseyside County Council.
50 seats needed for a majority

Following boundary changes, which reduced the number of wards from 40 to 33, three councillors were elected for each ward. This was the first Council since Aldermen were abolished.
