History
editThe area in what is known as Kensing today was founded in the early 1900s around Dee Flanniken's sawmill. Its name is a portmanteau of the surnames of two local families, Flanniken and Sansing. When the amount of lumber ran out and the sawmill closed, residents left Kensing. Only 10 people and one business were left in 1933. County maps released three years later showed a church and twenty scattered houses in Kensing. The population went up to 25 in 1945. It still only had one business and some scattered farms in 1963. A church and cemetery were in the area in the 1984 county highway map. The population increased to 35 in 2000.[2]
Geography
editKensing is located on Farm to Market Road 895 in a richly wooded delta on the Sulphur River, 6 mi (9.7 km) east of Charleston in extreme-eastern Delta County.[2]
Education
editKensing's first school was founded in 1902 and was on the 1936 county highway map. It remained open in 1951, then closed in 1963. Since 1970, Kensing has been served by the Cooper Independent School District.[2]
