Jazz Henry is an artist, musician, and actress from the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a trumpet player for the Original Pinettes Brass Band.[1]

Musical career

edit

Background

edit

Jazz Henry began playing trombone at age 12. [2] She then enrolled in the Roots of Music program, where she was encouraged to switch to playing the clarinet. Henry picked up the trumpet within the year by watching her bandmates at the Roots of Music. Her dad, Corey Henry, assisted her in further honing her skills on the trumpet.[3][4]

Musical Upbringing

edit

Jazz's childhood revolved largely around music. Her father, Corey Henry, is a well-known trombonist in New Orleans, currently leading his own band, "Corey Henry and the Treme Funktet".[5] Because of Corey's musical career, Jazz found herself surrounded by many notable local musicians throughout her childhood, including Trombone Shorty, Derrick Tabb, Hot 8 Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, and Glen David Andrews. Jazz cites all of these musicians as her influences, noting that their presence encouraged her to develop a consistent practice regimen and further her musicianship, while also providing opportunities for her to sit in with more experienced musicians.[3][2]

Roots of Music

edit

Jazz furthered her music education in the Roots of Music program. Through her participation in this intensive music education program, she developed the necessary physical stamina to participate in marching groups while simultaneously continuing to refine her technical skills on her instrument. Most notably, Jazz's participation in this program led to her being introduced to her future band, The Original Pinettes Brass Band, by the program director, Derrick Tabb.

The Original Pinettes

edit

Henry was and still is the youngest member of the band, joining when she was around 15 years old.[6] During the COVID-19 lockdown, Henry continued to make music with The Original Pinettes however because of the pandemic the band held live streams of their performances[4] rather than live performances. The Original Pinettes has now gone back to live performances and has a residence at Bullet's Sports Bar as well as other regular gigs around the city of New Orleans.

Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs

edit

Henry is also a noted dancer in New Orleans specializing in second-line dance. She began parading with the Money Wasters Social Aid and Pleasure Club[7] as a child and now parades with Footwerk Family.[8]

Acting career

edit

As an actor, Henry has appeared in Treme (TV series) , NCIS: New Orleans, and The Whole Gritty City [9]
