Hamid Reza Abbasi is an Iranian-American board-certified neurosurgeon known for his work in advanced minimally invasive spine surgery, notably the Trans-Kambin OLLIF (Oblique Lateral-Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) procedure.[1] He also serves as the Chief Medical Officer and founder of Inspired Spine.[2][3]

Early life and education edit

Hamid Abbasi was born in Tehran, Iran in 1968, Hamid Abbasi attended his higher education at the University of Isfahan before immigrating to Germany. In 1989, he commenced his medical studies at the University of Heidelberg, obtaining his medical degree between 1989-1996. Concurrently, he pursued a Ph.D. in computer science, which he completed between 1993-1998.[4]

Following his education, Abbasi underwent neurosurgery residency training at Heidelberg University Faculty of Medicine in Mannheim and North Rhine-Westphalian Technical University in Aachen, Germany, from 1996 to 1999. He worked at Stanford University, initially as a postdoctoral fellow specializing in surgical navigation and spine surgery, eventually transitioning to a research associate position.[5]

In 2001, Abbasi commenced his career at Dartmouth College in general surgery before joining the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas. Here, he completed a comprehensive residency program in neurosurgery from 2002 to 2008, further enhancing his expertise. During his residency, he spent a year at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, gaining experience in brain tumors.[6]

Post-Hurricane Ike in 2008, Abbasi relocated to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he served as an attending neurosurgeon. Since 2012, he has practiced in Minnesota, specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery. Abbasi's pioneering work has led to the development of various technologies for minimally invasive spine surgery, notably the transkambin OLLIF procedure, which he has performed over 1,500 times and trans-thoracic minimally invasive approaches, MIS-DTIF.[7][8]

Abbasi teaches Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery to people around the world. He has presented at numerous conferences and educational events around the world including in India, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and Ecuador, sharing his expertise.[9][10]

Accreditations and Memberships edit

Abbasi is a fellow of professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS) since 2012. He actively contributes to medical conferences as a speaker and serves as a trainer for the transkambin OLLIF procedure.[11]
