Gregory Bortz is a South African-born businessman and entrepreneur. He serves as the chairman of his family holding company, GMB Investments (Pty) Ltd, the Chairman of Cape Racing, and the Chief Executive Officer of Grand Parade Investments Limited. Bortz is a dual South African and United States citizen.

Life and career

Bortz grew up in Durban, South Africa.[1][2][3] He attended the University of Cape Town from 1988 to 1992, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Science degree in Finance and Accounting.[4][5]

Bortz started his career in 1993 at Arthur Andersen in Johannesburg before joining Ernst & Young in London in 1994. He subsequently joined Credit Suisse First Boston in Los Angeles in 1998, working as an investment banker until 2000. He continued his investment banking career at Lehman Brothers in Los Angeles, a firm he joined in 2000, until his departure in 2005.[6][7]

In 2005, Bortz founded CREO Capital Partners, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm focused on distressed and turnaround investments. Bortz managed CREO until his retirement from the firm in 2014.[8][9][10]

Bortz has served as the chairman of his family's investment company, GMB Investments (Pty) Ltd,  since July 2012.[11][12] In 2023, after acquiring a controlling stake, he was appointed CEO of Grand Parade Investments Limited, a publicly traded gaming and casino company (JSE: GPL).[13][14][15][16][17] Additionally, Bortz is Chairman of Cape Racing, the horse racing operator in the Western Cape of South Africa.[18][19][20][21][22]

Bortz is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Bortz currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa.[citation needed]
