editGillespie Township is named for Judge Joseph Gillespie.[3]

editAccording to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 36.16 square miles (93.7 km2), of which 35.65 square miles (92.3 km2) (or 98.59%) is land and 0.51 square miles (1.3 km2) (or 1.41%) is water.[2]
