The competition has been played at many golf courses throughout France and has frequented several golf courses on more than one occasion.[2] The trophy is named after french golfer Michel Carlhian [fr] (1911–77).

From 1926 to 1950, the event was played in stroke play format. In 1951, it took its current form of a two-round stroke play qualification followed by a final match play bracket.[3]

The championship did not take place 1940–46, 1982, 1984 and in 2020.[2] It is one of nine qualification events for the European team in the Junior Ryder Cup.[4]
