Summary

Description

A glass of Old Port Ale from Svyturys (Carlsberg) in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on draft at Čili Pica in Nida, Lithuania.

Svyturys Old Port Ale is a 5.5% abv Scottish ale. It poured a clear copper brown color with a thin head. It had a sweet wort aroma. Mouthfeel was medium heavy with a slight oily texture and a mild sour touch. Flavor had a rounded sweetness with hints of toffee. It had a crisp, slightly bitter finish. A nice, drinkable Scottish ale.

As the date on this class indicates, Svyturys traces its roots back to 1784 when the merchant J. W. Reincke established a brewery in Memel in East Prussia, today known as Klaipėda in Lithuania, making it the second oldest brewery in Lithuania. Since then, the brewery’s emblem has been adorned with the sea eagle that is also found on the Reincke family’s coat of arms. The brewery was named Švyturys, Lithuanian for "the lighthouse", when it was rebuilt after World War II.
