Svenska: Johan Fredrik Burghardi var son till grosshandlaren och klädesfabrikören Daniel Burghardi från Lübeck (död 1727) och Maria Liwijn (1698-1784) i hennes första gifte.

I Nationalmusei samling finns sedan tidigare en studie av handen på ryggstödet, NM 3677. Målningen är monterad i en autentisk gustaviansk ram.

Målningen är ett midjeporträtt av grosshandlaren Johan Fredrik Burghardi. Han är iklädd en grå dräkt och bär utanpå den en cape i grålila siden. I sin högra hand som vilar på överdelen av en stolsrygg håller han en fjäderprydd hatt. Bildens bakgrund är typisk för tiden, gråbrun och svagt belyst.
