Svenska: I förgrunden sitter en ung student iklädd en vit skjorta med bred krage, brungrön jacka och svart barett. Han sitter lutad mot ett bord draperat med en orientalisk matta, typiskt för tiden, på vilken ett flertal böcker ligger utspridda. Den unge mannen drömmer sig bort. Han vilar huvudet i höger hand och stödjer armbågen på en ihopslagen volym, vänster hand är instucken i jackans linning. Bakgrunden utgörs av en neutral gråaktig vägg; ett varmt gyllene ljus lyser upp gestalten uppifrån vänster så att pannan och ögonen skuggas av den stora hatten. Härmed skapas en ljusdunkeleffekt, som kännetecknar tidens holländska måleri.
