This engine core was designed by the w:Allison Engine Company division of w:General Motors, with the w:contra-rotating fans designed by w:Hamilton Standard, the inventor of the propfan concept. w:Pratt & Whitney, like Hamilton Standard a division of w:United Technologies, invested in the program in 1986 and is tasked with aircraft integration and flight test coordination.
