The Music Pagoda, in the Music Grove near the Nethermead Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY June 05, 2005, looking east toward the Lilly Pond and Binnen Bridge. The Music Pagoda sits in a grove of London Plane trees that furnish a great deal of shade for summer-time picnickers and turn a beautiful shade of yellow in October. The Music Grove Bridge is on the far left. The Music Pagoda itself is left of center in the middle ground. The recently restored Lily Pond lies beyond the trees in an open area. The footpath forks at this point, with the east branch travelling over the Binnen Falls Bridge, right of center, and the south branch travelling over the Lullwater Bridge, off camera to the right. See the Prospect Park Alliance Map[dead link] for more information on park features.
Built in 1887, the Music Pagoda is one of the earliest surviving park structures that was not built under the supervision of Olmsted and Vaux. The original wooden superstructure was heavily damaged by fire in 1967 and was reconstructed to closely match the original superstructure. According to Clay Lancaster's Handbook of Prospect Park The Music Pagoda became the primary location for musical offerings after 1887 because the acoustics of the nearby Music Island were really not that good. Presently, the Prospect Park Bandshell on the west side of the Park, near 9th Street, offers a larger, better equipped stage for a variety of musical offerings. Since the mid 1970's, the Music Pagoda has gone largely unused; it may host an occasional church picnic that has a small musical venue.
