Notes Pottery lamps had a decorative and symbolic function but could not be used to produce light. This lamp is the earliest datable object from Iznik that is decorated with bole red. The design is considered experimental as the red is thin and uneven. The red bole was used extensively in subsequent pottery produced in Iznik. In contrast the black ground was not adopted in later pottery.
