Description

Carved work by Charles Mawer, salvaged from Kirkgate Market, Bradford in 1973 by Bradford City Council. The market was designed by Lockwood & Mawson, completed 1872, demolished 1973.

In 2014 seven carved stones and an iron lamp base were rescued from storage by a local action group. They were placed on public display on the steps of Merchant's House, Peckover Street, Little Germany, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

This was part of the tympanum carving by Mawer, once placed at roof level above the main entrance to the market. It depicts one of the cherubs supporting the Bradford coat of arms. The head is elongated, so as to appear correct when viewed from below.
