English: The formal legal text encompassing matters of social conduct as well as official rules and laws were stipulated in traditional 16th century Melaka society. These include the Undang-Undang Melaka (Laws of Malacca), also called the Hukum Kanun Melaka and Risalat Hukum Kanun, and the Undang-Undang Laut Melaka (the Maritime Laws of Malacca). The rules were formed through the evolution of three main influences, namely the non-indigenous Hidu/Buddhist tradition, Islamic jurisdiction and indigenous "adat".
The Hukum Kanun Melaka contains 44 sections of rules, with sections 29 to 34 being the most related to business and financial practices. The book explains business ethics, transaction of goods, the condition of goods on sale and acceptable buyer and seller conduct, which are on Shariah or Islamic law.
