Description
Pillow. Stoneware pillow with white slip, iron brown painting and clear glazeCizhou ware, Jin dynasty (1115-1234)This magnificent piece was created as a pillow, for Chinese sleepers favoured a solid neck rest that ensured correct posture and a cool surface in summer. The pillow was made at the “type site” of Cizhou in Hebei province, that gave its name to the whole class of Cizhou ceramics. It was manufactured by a family firm who specialised in pillow-making, and whose name is stamped on the base: “made by the Zhang family”. Round the side runs a fluently-drawn scroll, and on top a playful depiction of a snoozing tiger. Tigers represent the masculine yang principle in nature and are the kings of beasts, a fact demonstrated by four stripes on the animal’s forehead that form the character wang (king). Regarded as one of the four super-intelligent creatures (along with the dragon, phoenix and tortoise), the zestful tiger embodies the drive to achieve and make progress. The Zhang family decorated many pillows with tigers, no doubt intended for their male customers.
