Het schild is afkomstig uit de familie van mevrouw Smit-Groot. Dit Molukse (van Seram of Halmahera) schild werd verworven op de noordkust van Nederlands Nw. Guinea en was, volgens de familieverhalen, in het bezit van J. van Hasselt, pionier van de Protestante zending in Noord Nw. Guinea..
