Beethoven_Moonlight_sonata_sequenced.ogg (Ogg Vorbis sound file, length 5 min 37 s, 130 kbps, file size: 5.22 MB)

Summary

A computer generated "performance" of the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 ("Moonlight"). This obviously cannot replace a performance by a good pianist, but maybe it can nonetheless give a first impression of what the piece sounds like (and it might do a slightly better job than the Mutopia midi), until a generous pianist makes a recording available.

"Performance": Essentially based on this Ricordi edition score (dynamics, pedal, phrasing). The tempo was set to 50 qpm instead of 60, as it is closer to most recorded performances i know of.

Technical: Sequenced in Rosegarden. Converted to WAV via the Software synthesizer Fluidsynth and the beautiful "Steinway Grand Piano 1.2" soundfont by Soeren Bovbjerg archive copy at the Wayback Machine. With Audacity, some reverb was added (TAP Reverberator LADSPA plugin) and then exported as OGG.

For some reason I have yet to figure out, MIDI export in Rosegarden failed (at least, Fluidynth played only garbage when confronted with the exported MIDI file), thus MIDI format is not available. The original Rosegarden project file cannot be uploaded to the Commons due to file format restrictions, but it is available upon request.
