English: Pain signals are carried from sensory nerves to the brain. Nociceptors from the body and some visceral organs convey signals to the spinal cord. These ascend to the brain along the spinothalamic and spinobulbar pathways. Nociceptors from the face convey signals to the trigeminal nucleus. Some visceral organs convey pain signals along the vagus nerve to the solitary nucleus. Discriminatory pain information is conveyed to the somatosensory cortex. Affective components of pain are conveyed to multiple cortical areas. Many cortical-cortical projections, such as those to the prefrontal cortex, are not depicted. The organization of spinal circuits and cortical nuclei are not depicted in detail.
