Undersökningarna av bebyggelse intill gravfältet Västra Porten/Smällen påbörjades säsongen 2000, då initial arkeologisk undersökningsverksamhet inleddes på gravfältet och dess närkontext under Kungahällaprojektet, lett av arkeolog Kristina Bengtsson. 2005-2011 genomförde sedan arkeologerna vid Göteborgs universitet utgrävningar varje säsong.
English: Archaeologists Carl L. Thunberg and Johan Ling from the University of Gothenburg during excavations in Ytterby 2009, the year when what has been interpreted to be the original royal estate Kungahälla was found (RAÄ Ytterby 22:1). The investigations of settlement remains next to the RAÄ 22 Västra Porten/Smällen burial ground began in the 2000 season, when initial archaeological research activities began on the burial ground and its immediate context during the Kungahälla project, led by archaeologist Kristina Bengtsson. From 2005 to 2011, the archaeologists at the University of Gothenburg carried out excavations every season.
