Yajnasena (transl. यज्ञसेन/यज्ञसेना) was the first independent king of Vidarbha after the decline of the Maurya Empire.[1] He is represented as a relative (sister's husband) of a Mauryan minister, and a rival of Pushyamitra Shunga. He declared his independence and kept his cousin, Mádhavasena in custody.[2] Yajnasena's kingdom was later conquered by Agnimitra and was made a suzerain kingdom under the Shunga Empire.[3] Vidarbha was partitioned into east and west between Yajnasena and Mádhavasena under the Shunga suzerainty, by Agnimitra.[4]
