History

edit

Early History

edit

The estate of Westergate Wood was established in the early 17th century, by a prominent family in Sussex. Originally a modest hunting lodge, the estate was expanded over the centuries, with significant developments during the Georgian period.

Acquisition by the Kitchener Family

edit

In 1902, following his return from the Second Boer War, Field Marshal Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener purchased Westergate Wood. Lord Kitchener, known for his roles in various British military campaigns, including his service as Secretary of State for War during World War I, found the estate to be a tranquil retreat from his public duties.

Kitchener made several improvements to the estate, including the addition of Victorian-style extensions to the main house and the development of formal gardens. His time at Westergate Wood was marked by his focus on both the estate's management and his personal interests in horticulture.

The Kitchener Legacy

edit

After Lord Kitchener's death in 1916, Westergate Wood passed to his nephew, Henry Franklin-Cousins, 2nd Earl Kitchener. The estate has since remained in the hands of the Kitchener family, with each generation contributing to its preservation and the maintenance of its historical significance.

Architecture

edit

The main house at Westergate Wood is an exemplary piece of Georgian architecture, characterized by its symmetrical design, sash windows, and classical proportions. The Victorian additions, commissioned by Lord Kitchener, include a grand library and a conservatory, reflecting the tastes of the late 19th century.

The estate also features several outbuildings, including a stable block, a chapel, and servants' quarters, all constructed in the traditional Sussex style, using locally sourced flint and brick.

Gardens and Grounds

edit

The gardens at Westergate Wood are renowned for their design, attributed to Gertrude Jekyll, a famous British horticulturist and garden designer. The grounds include formal gardens with elaborate parterres, a rose garden, and extensive woodland walks. A notable feature is the collection of rare rhododendrons and azaleas, which are particularly admired during the spring bloom.

Present Day

edit

Westergate Wood remains a private residence, currently owned by the descendants of Lord Kitchener. The estate is occasionally opened to the public for special events, including garden tours and charitable functions. The Kitchener family continues to be involved in the local community and contributes to the preservation of Sussex's natural and historical heritage.

Location

edit

Westergate Wood is situated near the historic town of Arundel, in the picturesque countryside of West Sussex. The estate is located close to other significant landmarks, including Arundel Castle and the South Downs National Park.
