Draft:WMILAR: World Moot on International Law and Animal Rights

The World Moot on International Law and Animal Rights (WMILAR) is a global-scale project that comprises an annual global moot competition and moot training courses. It is affected in partnership with various bases at the international and regional levels. Each major geo-political region has two regional bases, who alternate between hosting the moot.

History edit

The WMILAR was founded by Ankita Shanker LLB (R’dg) BCL (Oxf) BPTC (BPP) in June 2022.[1]

Prior to the WMILAR, Ankita co-founded Lincoln’s Inn’s Internal Mooting Competition[2] and founded the 1st International Human and Animal Rights Law Moot Court Competition at the national level in the UK and Myanmar, respectively. She did the former in her role as Secretary to the Mooting Club of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, and the latter in her role as Expert on Moot Court Training to Myanmar, for which she was appointed by the International Commission of Jurists and the Danish Institute for Human Rights. These moots served as her inspiration to design and develop the WMILAR.

The first cycle of the WMILAR will officially commence in February 2024, and it will run annually thereafter, from February to December each year.

Overview edit

The WMILAR combines traditional aspects of International Law (including but not limited to International Human Rights Law and International Environmental Law) with contemporary issues of animal rights. It does so through a mooting competition aimed at law students, and a 2-pronged training course aimed at law students and at law teachers.

The primary objectives of the WMILAR are to train future generations of lawyers in animal rights advocacy, and to highlight issues of animal rights and their interrelationship with other global concerns such as human rights and environmental protection. Secondarily, the WMILAR aims at capacity-building in regions with underdeveloped or developing mooting cultures, by offering training to mooters and coaches and by encouraging easy access to moot court participation at accessible bases in geo-political regions across the world.[1]
