Violaine Corradi (born in Trieste, 1959 - died February 15, 2022), is an Italo-Canadian composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. She is best known for her collaboration with the Canadian entertainment company Cirque du Soleil [citation], for whom she created the scores for the contemporary theatrical circus productions Dralion [citation], Varekai [citation] and ZAiA [citation], amongst others.
Biography
editCorradi was born into a three generational family of professional musicians. Her maternal grandfather Napoléon Dansereau, was a cellist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, her paternal grandfather Paride Corradi, played French Horn with the Opera de Trieste. Her mother, Aline Dansereau (BMus from the Curtis Institute of Music) [citation] was an opera singer and teacher, and her father, Maestro Angelo Corradi, was a conductor, composer, pianist and flute player. Her sister Isabelle Corradi is a singer, dancer, actor, and choreographer who sang and performed, amongst others, with the Canadian musical theatre company of Les Misérables [citation] (Canada and United States), and around the world for 23 years with Cirque du Soleil, on the shows Alegria [citation], Saltimbanco [citation], and Varekai.
Corradi began performing professionally as a child. At the age of seven, she and her sister Isabelle, were selected to be part of the children’s choir that performed through the years with the Bolshoi Opera [citation], the Scala de Milano [citation] and the Opéra de Montreal [citation] during their presentations at the Place des Arts in Montreal [citation]. From 1992 to 1998 she composed the music and co-produced along with Helene Dorion [citation], the audio series “Poesié/musique” (Éditions du Noroit [citation]), which featured leading Quebec poets reading their works.
During the course of her live performance career, Corradi toured in North America and Europe, while contributing to over 30 albums either as composer, arranger, producer, vocalist and/or keyboardist [citation]
Corradi’s first solo album, Passages, was released in 1996 [citation]. Some of the pieces from this album are included in anthologies alongside works by Philip Glass, Jon Anderson and Andreas Vollenweider [citation]. She created the music for two IMAX movies: Great North and Bears [citation] and the short film The Elder (Official Selection at the Monaco International Film Festival in 2016).
In 2003, she was commissioned by Tony and Emmy Award winner James Mason (creator of the Broadway production “Blast!”) to write the overture for his musical "Cyberjam" that had a successful run at the Queen's Theatre (West End, London) [citation]. Her music has also been aired at events like the Bollywood Awards and numerous World Championships (sources).
