The UN Symphony Orchestra (officially UNSRC Symphony Orchestra) is a community orchestra of the United Nations community in New York. It is made up of amateur musicians who are employees of the United Nations, in New York, as well as diplomats at the Permanent Missions to the UN, NGOs and other members of the community and their families.
History
editThe ensemble was founded in 2011 by Predrag Vasić and a group of staff members of the United Nations headquarters in New York. The orchestra's primary mission is, through music, to promote peace, friendship and cooperation between nations, respect for diversity and universality. By involving those who work in international organizations, the orchestra shows their engagement in these ideals.
Over the years, the orchestra has grown, and currently has over 90 active musicians on the roster. Some of the members are professional musicians at some point in their lives and have since chosen careers in international civil service. Others had musical training and/or played in community orchestras. The orchestra is an international ensemble, and its members come from around 30 different countries, and represent over 20 UN departments, agencies, funds and programmes, as well as several Permanent Missions to the UN.
Some of the highlights include charity performances with featured soloists, such as violinist Ryu Goto.
They ensemble usually schedules four performances per season, in addition to occasional performances for special events at the United Nations.
Organization
editThe UN Symphony Orchestra is organised as one of the social clubs under the United Nations Staff Recreation Council. It is governed by its five-member Executive Council.
