Trouble is my Business is a 2018 Film noir detective film directed by Tom Konkle, starring Vernon Wells (actor) and Brittney Powell.[1] Set in the classic style of film noir, this modern interpretation pays homage to the Hardboiled detective genre of the 1940s and 1950s.[2]

Plot

The film follows Roland Drake (played by Tom Konkle), a private investigator in 1940s Los Angeles, as he is hired to find a missing woman named Jennifer Montemar.[3]. As Drake delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a complex web of intrigue, deceit, and dangerous characters[4]. Along the way, he encounters a femme fatale named Evelyn Montemar (Brittney Powell) and corrupt police officers lead by detective Barry Tate (Vernon Wells), adding to the film's noir atmosphere.[5]

Production

Trouble is my Business was directed by Thomas Konkle, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Brittney Powell.[6] Trouble is my Business is a revisit to the thrilling days of yesteryear black and white crime drama in the tradition of The Maltese Falcon and a generation of films like it.[7] The film was independently produced on a modest budget, which allowed the filmmakers to capture the essence of classic film noir. Reception

The film has garnered attention for its dedication to the film noir genre and its visual style in reviews, reminiscent of classic black-and-white detective films. Fans of the genre appreciate its use of familiar tropes and conventions. It is currently available on streaming platforms in the United States and abroad.[9]

Trivia

Mollie Fitzgerald who had a small part as the maid in the movie was also a line producer in the film. Fitzgerald, who had worked on Captain America: The First Avenger was charged with stabbing her mother to death.[10] According to the Olathe Police Department, they had responded to an armed altercation on December 20, 2019. In Captain America, Fitzgerald played Stark Girl and worked as an assistant to the director, Joe Johnston.[11] Nods to Out of the Past in several shots and even the movie marquee in the background of a street scene is Build My Gallows High. Nods to Raymond Chandler and his Marlowe mysteries as well.
