The Vanished People is an italian independent rock band formed in 2022. It consists of two members: pianist Jacopo Maria Gaeta and guitarist Piero Bonanni. They became popular for for their musical style greatly influenced by J-rock and J-pop, mixed with American/British progressive rock, Jazz, Electro House and numerous other genres.
The Vanished People's single “Castaway” went viral on TikTok with videos from Reverse:1999, leading the group to collaborate with the video game[1].
The band is also known for their distinctive song covers, often featuring a ghost/racoon that fans have nicknamed “Boozer” and which has become the group's mascot[2]
Style
editThe Vanished People's musical style combines various elements of world music mainly from Japan and South-Korea with more classic stylings of American Rock and Pop. Both members grew up listening to Pink Floyd and after discovering the anime "Chainsaw Man" they decided to take inspiration from Japanese artists like ZUTOMAYO, Fuji Kaze, Kenshi Yonezu, Tatsuya Kitani and Eve. They also claimed to be inspired by Charlie Puth, Dream Theater, Steven Wilson and Pino Daniele.[3][4]
History
editThe two members met in the city of Lanciano and bound by the same musical tastes have played in various cover bands. Eventually they decided to start a duo project and release the single “AWAKE” which marks the birth of the group (The very name of the band is inspired by the lyrics of the song about the feeling of being forgotten by someone).[5]
After graduation both members moved to Milan, Piero studying engineering and Jacopo attending the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music.[3][6]
They got to collaborate with Italian jazz saxophonist Max Ionata on the track “My Last Tape,” which is very different from the other songs and considered a small cult item among fans. The turning point came with “MOKA!” released on March 31, 2023, the first song to define the band's unique style. The song had a rapid rise on TikTok because of its similarity to J-Rock songs often used in anime. With subsequent singles “QUEEN OF THE NIGHT,” “GHOSTRADE,” and “SNAP SNAP,” The Vanished People further developed their musical language by also drawing from K-Pop. On October 20, 2023, the School Trip EP is released, gaining popularity thanks to the song “Castaway,” which achieves high views on TikTok due to fans' association with the Bluepoch video game “Reverse:1999” (Released at that same time). The band then gets to collaborate with Bluepoch by writing the song “Backwards” which will be played during the “Panoramic Ripples Fan Concert", broadcast live on the Reverse:1999 channel. A phase of further experimentation follows with the singles “Glass Moon Dance” and “SOUL VACATION” which feature typical Jazz, Funk and Fusion sounds, as well as nice pop culture references such as the movies “Pulp Fiction(1994)” and “The Aviator(2004)” paid homage in the cover of the former and a quote from the Italian TV series “Boris” shouted in the finale of the latter.[7]
