St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church[1] is an Anglican church in the town of Gustavia on the island of St Barts,[2] a dependency of France in the Caribbean. It is the only english-speaking church on St Barts and is part of the Diocese of the North East Caribbean and Aruba, which is one of the eight dioceses[3] in the Anglican Province of the West Indies. The church sits on the waterfront across from the harbour.
The church was built during the Swedish era of St Barts, when from 1784 to 1878 France ceded control of the island to Sweden in exchange for trading rights in the Swedish port of Gothenburg.[4]
Construction of the church was started in 1853 on land donated by Sir Richard Dinzey[5], native of Saba. It is built of native stone, with limestone for the front wall and darker stone on the sides, yellow bricks from France for the front steps and corners and doors trimmed with black lava stone from Statia. It was finished in 1855.[6]
