original Sony α9 and continued to serve as Sony's flagship camera as of its release in October 2019. The α9 II is characterized by Sony as a professional mirrorless camera system aimed at sports photographers, photojournalists, and other professionals requiring high-speed performance and connectivity features.

Sony initially priced the α9 II at $4,500 with an availability date in November 2019.

The headline feature of the α9 II includes a 10 frames per second burst shooting with the mechanical shutter, which complements the silent 20 fps electronic shutter capability from the original α9. The camera also features updated ergonomics and improved connectivity options, including an upgraded Ethernet port and a faster, more robust 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Additionally, the α9 II discontinued compatibility with the Memory Stick format; both memory card slots now support SD cards with UHS-II protocol for faster data transfer and increased storage capabilities.

Despite these updates, the α9 II retains many features from the original α9, such as the 24.2 MP full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with integral memory, allowing for high-speed data readout. It also keeps the same BIONZ X image processor, which ensures fast processing speeds and h

igh-quality image output. The electronic viewfinder with 3.69 million dots and blackout-free shooting during high-speed bursts is also carried over from the α9, providing a continuous live view with minimal lag.

The Sony α9 III, announced in November 2023, features a global shutter and 120 fps burst, marking another significant advancement in the series.
