History

edit

After the 2012 Rakhine State riots, the Myanmar military junta banned Rohingya from attending colleges and universities in Rakhine State. Eventually, the junta loosened restrictions in 2017 to allow the few Rohingya with identification documents to attend distance education classes at Sittway University.[1] However, they were only allowed to learn the Burmese language, history, and geography. In early May 2022, the SAC junta allowed Rohingya with identity documents to fully attend tertiary educational institutions, including Sittway University. However, they are not allowed to live in dormitories, and university faculty frequently discriminate against them.[2]
