Life and Work

edit

Severin Hallauer was born in 1996 in Basel and grew up in Northwestern Switzerland.[1] From 2013 to 2014, he completed the preparatory course at the School of Design Basel.[2] During the preparatory course, Hallauer was arrested along with a collective of fellow students in 2014 during the Art Basel on the Messeplatz by the police due to an art performance.[3][4] The incident caused a stir in the art world and made headlines.[5]

From 2014, Hallauer acted as an actor at the Theater Basel in the youth theater.[6] In 2015, he caused sensations with an art action where he appeared naked and painted white for mandatory recruitment into the Swiss Army.[7] From 2015 to 2019, Hallauer studied Visual Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts[8] and in the Jankowski class[9] at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in 2018. In 2021, Hallauer received the Art Promotion Award of the Canton of Solothurn.[10] In 2019, Hallauer made headlines again during the Sofia Art Week in Bulgaria with a public art performance that went viral. In this performance, he appeared naked on monuments, including the famous lion statues in front of the Palace of Justice in Sofia.[11][12][13][14]

Hallauer expresses himself in compelling performances and works across various media on philosophical and sociopolitical issues.[15] His oeuvre includes works in installation, video, performance, sculpture, painting, and photography.

Besides his work as a visual artist, Severin Hallauer also performs on various stages as an actor[16] and model[17], and appears in films, music videos, and fashion films. Hallauer was most recently seen in the multi-award-winning and internationally screened short film Heart Fruit by Kim Allamand at the Locarno Film Festival, among others.[18][19][20] In 2018, Hallauer performed in The Divine Comedy by Rirkrit Tiravanija at the Fondation Beyeler.[21]

Quotes

edit

"Obstacles are challenges where, at best, one can fail iconically. Creating art means learning to fail better." — Severin Hallauer

[22]

Criticism

edit

Severin Hallauer's work polarizes and receives both recognition and critical feedback.[23] Some critics praise his work as a courageous and profound examination of social and philosophical issues. Others see his actions as an exaggerated self-presentation aimed at scandal. In 2024, Hallauer responded to this criticism in an interview, saying: “Scandal plays no role in my work. I don't sit in my studio and imagine how I can provoke my fellow human beings. It's a ruthless honesty that I demand from my art. [...] If viewers feel provoked by my art, that says more about them than about me and my art."[24]
