It is a subsidiary of Stora Enso, a leading renewable materials company. Selfly Store was officially established as its own company in 2021, though its foundations and development began earlier under Stora Enso.

Selfly Store originated in 2016 from an innovation in paper-based RFID technology by two Stora Enso employees. In 2017, a customer suggested using these RFID tags for an advanced vending machine capable of handling a wide range of products, leading to the development of the first smart fridge prototype. The project evolved with the next-generation smart fridge in 2019, which featured interactive displays for advertising and enhanced customer engagement.[2]
In 2021, to capitalize on these advancements, Stora Enso spun off Selfly Store as an independent company. This shift allowed for focused innovation and quicker adaptation to market needs. In 2022, Selfly Store expanded its product line with three new models—Selfly Ambient, Selfly Fridge, and Selfly Freezer—each designed with specific temperature controls and advanced RFID capabilities. In 2023 the Selfly Freezer was launched commercially as the first smart vending freezer on the market.[3] Together with the new models, the development of the Selfly Cloud platform has continued, to enable merchants to run data-driven vending businesses.
