Samuel Massie (born 1992 in Bergen, Norway) is a half Norwegian-English adventurer, speaker, presenter, author, and public debater. His connection to England comes from his father being from Liverpool, where Samuel has also lived.
Expeditions
editMassie became truly known to the public in 2011 when he participated in the Berserk expedition to Antarctica with captain Jarle Andhøy and three other shipmates, aiming to honor Roald Amundsen 100 years after his South Pole conquest. The mission ended tragically when their vessel was reported missing. Massie, along with the rest was reported deceased, but it later emerged that he and the expedition leader were alive, while the remaining three crew members disappeared without a trace in the Southern Ocean. The boat and crew have never been found.[1]
In 2012, he sailed back to Antarctica to search for traces of the sailboat, Berserk. Despite attempts by New Zealand authorities to halt their expedition, they proceeded. The crew faced wrongful imprisonment in Chile upon their return but were released two weeks later.[2][3]
Authorship
editIn 2014, he published "Hold Fast!" This is Samuel Massie's personal and autobiographical account of some pivotal and life-changing years in his life, detailing how he went from being a school dropout and on the wrong side of the law to becoming a determined polar explorer two years later. He also takes a clear stance against the diagnosis society and traditional educational system.[4]
Public Speaking
editFrom 2014 to 2020, Massie delivered over 1000 lectures across Europe, focusing on themes such as personal growth, change management, and mental health. He was featured as a speaker at TEDx in 2017.[5]
Television and Media
editMassie's media career began with a 2010 TV program aimed at mastering sailing and the outdoors. This was followed by two TV series from the expeditions with the sailing boat Berserk (2012) (2014) before he began working at TV2. He gained further recognition as a host for "Skal vi danse" (Strictly Come Dancing) and through the series "Samuel and Grandfather," showcasing his world travels with his grandfather.
Personal Life
editMassie married twice, first in 2010 to the daughter of a local tribal chief in Papua New Guinea, and again in 2015 in Norway, from whom he divorced two years later.
