The STARGATE type Ion Thruster is a type of Gridded Ion Thruster that utilize Corona Discharge Reaction as the plasma production mechanism, replacing the hollow cathode, radio frequency, or microwave ion source used in conventional Ion Thruster Systems.
Technology and System
editThe STARGATE type Ion Thruster utilize the Corona Discharge Reaction as the primary plasma production mechanism. While Corona Discharge Reaction ion sources are not uncommon, and have seen widespread usage for industrial applications, The STARGATE type Ion Thruster was the first application for it's proposed usage in a Gridded Ion Thruster system for Spacecraft Electric Propulsion applications.
The Ion Extraction mechanism on the STARGATE system utilize a set of ion extraction grids for ion extraction, similar to those found on other types of gridded ion thrusters. Due to the plasma production mechanism and ion extraction mechanism being physically and functionally separated on a gridded ion thruster, the gridded ion extraction mechanism should be compatible with an alternative plasma production mechanism.
Technology Origin
editThe STARGATE technology was developed by the STARGATE project team at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, as part of UAH Electric Propulsion Club's STARGATE project, an independent undergraduate student research organization in the College of Engineering and College of Science. The STARGATE project was founded on January 15th 2023, the project and technology concept was first publicly presented at the 2023 International Space Station Research and Development Conference (ISSRDC) in Seattle Washington, and the first functional prototype (SG-2_1A) was presented at the 2024 International Electric Propulsion Conference in Toulouse France.
The STARGATE project was named so due to the Initial Concept Feasibility Prototype's resemblance to the Stargate device in the Science Fiction TV show Stargate. The project's working name before it's official founding was called "CO.V.I.D. Thruster" (COrona Voltage Induced Discharge Thruster), the name was rejected by the project team due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic.
