The 2016 lecture was delivered by retired High Court Judge, Honourable Sir Ron Young, and it is provocative. Sir Ron was made Chief District Court Judge in 1993. Until 2001 he was responsible for the running of the District Court and oversaw its 112 judges in the criminal, civil, family and youth court sections. He was then made a High Court judge, presiding over criminal and civil cases until his retirement.[1]

In May 2016, 35-year-old Young's son Benjamin was killed in an automobile accident.[2]

In June 2016, Young was "made a Knight companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the judiciary".[3]

In 2018, Young was appointed chair of the New Zealand Parole Board.[4] In 2023, he personally apologized for an incident wherein the parents of a person severely injured in an attack were not properly notified of the parole hearing for the attacker.[5]
