Rodolfo Peraza is a contemporary artist known for his use of technology in the field of art. He has received multiple awards and fellowships for his contributions to the intersection of technology and art including from the Knight Foundation and The National Endowment for the Arts.[1] His works are said to engage technology and global media culture.[2] [3]

Early Life and Education

Rodolfo Peraza's was born in Cuba in 1980, a year the is associated with the start of "New Cuban Art" and placing him in a generation of Cuban artists that inherited a legacy of the hard-fought artistic freedom. [3] Rodolfo Peraza graduated from the Provincial School of Visual Arts in Camagüey (2000) and the Superior Institute of Art in Havana (2005).[4]

Artistic Style and Contributions

Along with his own artistic work, Peraza has created art spaces including Fanguito Estudio in Havana (2009), VRLab for the development of browser-based VR technology (2013) and the MUD Foundation (2019) which seeks to advance the intersections between art and digital technologies through art and education.[5]

Peraza has given notable lectures on contemporary Cuban art, including Beyond The Hyphen: Approaching a post geographic Cuba at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey (2012); Digital Practices in Cuban Contemporary Art at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Florida (2012); and More Than Ninety Miles Away: A Dialogue about Cuban Art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (2012).[4]

Notable Works

For Your Safety is a series in which the human figure is reduced to symbols that are constantly in conflict with its environment said to address issues of authority and control. This work was discussed on February 6, 2012, as part of the Works in Progress series at the National Gallery of Art.[3]
