Richie Floyd is an American politician and activist. Floyd currently serves as the City Council Member for District 8 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Floyd was elected to this position in January 2022. His term will end in January 2027.[1]
Career
editBefore running for City Council, Floyd was a middle school science teacher.[2] As a member and Faculty Representative of the Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association, Floyd was was a delegate to the AFL-CIO West Central FL Labor Council. Floyd has also worked as a Systems Engineer for Honeywell Aerospace[3]
City Council
editIn November 2021, Richie Floyd won the District 8 election with 51% of the vote. His opponent, Jeff Danner, was a former city council member from the same district.[4] Floyd is the first socialist elected official in Florida in over 100 years.[5]
Floyd received endorsements from Council Member Amy Foster, Council Member Lisa Wheeler-Bowman, Pastor Andy Oliver, Dream Defenders, Democratic Socialists of America, Sierra Club, SEIU Florida, SEIU 1199, and Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida.[6]
As a Council Member, Floyd has advocated for affordable housing to address the shortage in St. Petersburg.[7]
In February 2024, Floyd plans to introduce a resolution for a ceasefire, and supporting peace for all in Palestine and Israel.[8]
Personal life
editFloyd is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.[9]
Floyd resides in St. Petersburg, Florida with his wife Miranda.[10]
