Radio Mewat

edit

Radio Mewat, a SMART[1] initiative, is a community radio station in Mewat, Haryana, dedicated to amplify the voices of its community. Since its launch on September 1, 2010, the station has grown from a modest 2-hour unstructured broadcast to a dynamic 14-hour daily schedule. Shaped by the needs and aspirations of the people, Radio Mewat now addresses a wide range of local issues like information, education, and collective action, reflecting the spirit of the community.

Setting up a community radio station in Mewat has been an exciting journey filled with challenges, but it brought great opportunities for growth. Despite the initial lack of funds, trained manpower, and a consistent power supply, the real breakthrough came in addressing the complex social dynamics of the region. The local community's cautious approach, rooted in their traditional values, guided us to create content that resonated deeply with them. The trust earned by SMART through its dedicated work with women and children over the past fourteen years played a crucial role in our success. Today, Radio Mewat stands as a source of pride and identity, truly representing the voice of the community.

Awards and Recognitions

edit

Radio Mewat has received two National Awards, the first in the 'Sustainability Model' category in 2011, and the second for 'Most Creative and Innovative Programme' in 2012[2]. In June 2014, Radio Mewat was awarded the SKOCH Order of Merit[3] for its contributions to financial inclusion in Mewat. In 2015 Radio Mewat was also recognized in the Limca Book of Records for its pioneering radio-run consumer helpline, providing crucial information to marginalized communities.
