The Princess Elizabeth Trough

The Princess Elizabeth Trough (PET) is a narrow zone located on the southern end of the of the Kerguelen Plateau, separating it from Antarctica.^[1] Geophysical data points to the Princess Elizabeth Trough as the sector in which the separation of India and Antarctica began.^[1]

It is 350 kilometers wide with a depth of over 3,500 meters.^[1] It is underlain by a thin oceanic crust layer. The PET is one of the only channels deep enough to connect the Australian-Antarctic Basin in the east to the Weddell-Enderby Basin in the west, providing a route of exchange for Antarctic Bottom Water.
